Bright Phoebus @ The Greystones

Weds Sept 21 - Sam Carter with MC Martin Simpson
AT THE GREYSTONES, S11 7BS
Sam Carter won the Horizon Award for the best newcomer at the BBC Radio 2 Folk Awards in 2010. He was a Bright Phoebus Folk Rising star at one of our Boardwalk gigs and blew us away with his great playing and lovely songs. A startlingly perceptive and self-assured young singer and guitarist from the English midlands, Sam has spent the last few years busily honing his craft both as a writer and performer, studying guitar with Martin Simpson and touring with Bellowhead whilst holding down his post as Emerging Artist in Residence at London’s Southbank Centre.
Armed with a ‘killer voice’ (Nitin Sawhney) and the ability to play his guitar ‘like a harp’ (Time Out), as well as an unerring ability to put his personal experiences into a wider perspective, the east London-based songsmith is a Bright Phoebus favourite and we're delighted to welcome him to The Greystones.
With MC and mentor, Martin Simpson, this promises to be a night of top guitar playing with a great bit of collaboration thrown in!

Weds Oct 19th - Roy Bailey's Birthday Bash with MC James Fagan
AT THE GREYSTONES, S11 7BS
Sheffield's own Emeritus Professor of Sociology from the then Sheffield Polytechnic - the singing sociologist whom Tony Benn believes to be 'the socialist folk singer of his generation" - Roy Bailey celebrates his birthday a day early, with a special birthday bash for us at The Greystones. Roy has travelled the world singing the stories of people everywhere and creating an atmosphere like no other at his gigs, whether in an intimate folk club or The Royal Albert Hall, where he celebrated his 30 years of singing, ten years ago. The English Pete Seeger himself, Roy will make you laugh and cry in equal measure with his moving songs and hilarious anecdotes. Above all else, he creates a sense of and a belief in the community that we miss and so need in these difficult times.
With MC James Fagan, who grew up with Roy's songs and singing in his hometown of Sydney, Australia, where Roy would often stay on his tours of the antipodes, and who is now a well respected singer and musician himself, now living in Sheffield. This will be a night to remember.

Weds Nov 16 - John Kirkpatrick with MC Andy Cutting
AT THE GREYSTONES, S11 7BS
THE grand master of the diatonic button accordion, a fantastic song writer, stalwart of many of the most influential bands of the folk revival - Steeleye Span, The Albion Band, The Richard Thompson Band, Brass Monkey, Band of Hope and more - John Kirkpatrick is the living soul of English folk music. One of the founder members of border morris troupe, The Shropshire Bedlams, who he still dances with, John is steeped in traditional music and dance from his head to his toes - and he's a big man..... that's a lot of man to steep! One of our absolute favourites and most admired performers, we're over the moon that he has agreed to come and play for us. MC for the night is Andy Cutting, who once locked himself in his teenage bedroom for six months and learnt by heart, all the tunes on a John Kirkpatrick cassette. He freely acknowledges his admiration for John and we're very excited at the prospect of getting these two melodeon maestros together!
